Fun Facts About Sam!

Who is someone you admire, and why?

I admire the many mentors who took the time to share with me what they know. The faculty at UTSA’s Construction Management Program taught us to see the construction industry as a functioning whole while also analyzing how each part and role contributes to a successful project. I completed my internship with Southfork Construction and still use the knowledge Randy Hayden passed along to me to this day. Working under Rodney Harrell, my very first projects with Bandy gave me the insight on what it takes to succeed as a superintendent. Rodney taught me it takes patience and persistence without drawing attention or recognition on a personal level, instead listening and responding to the project needs. Lastly, the leadership and compassion I have been shown from the executives within our company has made a lifetime impression on me I will never forget.

Do you have any skills or talents that most people don’t know about?

I was employed as a bartender through college. I have worked in dive bars and classic cocktail venues, and enjoy bartending as hobby now for family and friends.

Flashback to when you were 10 years old. What do you want to be when you grow up?

In my youth I actually wanted to become an architect. It hadn’t occurred to me there is great challenge and reward in putting the buildings together. I discovered my passion while in college taking both design and construction courses, and in my third year changed my declared major to construction science and management. It was one of the best decisions I have made in my life.

How do you want people to remember you?

I would prefer the lessons learned and experiences gained with me to be remembered rather than myself as a person. If I can teach or return help to the next person in line the same my mentors did for me, I’d consider my time in the industry a success.

What three words describe you?

Positive, diligent, grounded

What are some causes you care about?

I’m a supporter of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Point of Pride, a non-profit organization that works to benefit trans people through gender affirming support programs.

What do you do in your spare time?

I’m usually spending time with my dog, Cash, camping at state parks, staying active, and attending live music venues. My favorite places are Billy Bob’s in Ft. Worth and Floore’s Country Store in Helotes.

What would be your personal motto?

I don’t really have a personal motto, but I believe in taking responsibility for my own actions and thoughts and how they affect others to the best of my ability. I try to always respect my environment and the life that inhabits it, while challenging myself to grow.
